NYC to Montauk

Montauk is the end of both the LIRR Montauk Branch and the Hampton Jitney's Montauk Line, and it is the farthest town on the South Fork, so the choice of mode changes the trip more here than anywhere.

The LIRR Friday express from Penn Station reaches Montauk in 2 h 31 min, 4:07 PM to 6:38 PM, for $33.00 peak or $24.50 off-peak. The Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch stops in Montauk. On the winter timetable the Friday express leaves Penn Station at 4:07 PM and arrives at 6:38 PM; other trains start in Jamaica or at Hunterspoint Avenue and need a connection from Manhattan. The board lists every scheduled train; weekday and weekend patterns differ. Fares to Montauk from Penn Station are $33.00 peak and $24.50 off-peak, or $41.00 and $33.00 bought on board, per the MTA fare chart in effect since January 4, 2026.

By car

Midtown to Montauk is 115.9 miles by the routes the OpenStreetMap router picks. NY 27 runs 120.58 miles from Brooklyn to Montauk Point State Park. East of Amagansett it becomes the Montauk Point State Parkway through Hither Hills State Park at Napeague, and it is the only through road to Montauk. Getting around Montauk when you arrive

SCT's East Hampton On-Demand zone covers Montauk, 6 AM to 8 PM daily. Viking's Block Island ferry leaves from Montauk Harbor in season.

The Jitney sells reserved seats, and its fare page notes that fares can rise 4 to 8 percent on peak days. The LIRR is unreserved on the regular schedule.

If you plan to leave on Sunday evening, check the last westbound LIRR train from Montauk on the current timetable before you commit to the train.
