The LIRR Cannonball

The Cannonball is the LIRR's summer express to the Hamptons. In 2026 it left Penn Station at 4:07 PM on Thursdays and Fridays, reached Westhampton in 92 or 96 minutes, then called at Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Montauk.

The MTA brought the Cannonball back for the 2026 season ahead of Memorial Day weekend, with the first train on Thursday, May 21. It skipped every stop between Penn Station and Westhampton. The one-way fare, as MTA's LIRR president described it, was $33, which matches the regular Zone 14 peak fare on the Montauk Branch.

What ran in summer 2026

  • The train ran every Thursday and Friday out of Penn Station, with exceptions on June 18 and 19 and July 2 and 3.
  • Reported travel time to Westhampton was 92 minutes on Thursdays and 96 minutes on Fridays.

What is in the winter data

The timetable data MTA published on October 26, 2026 still lists a Friday train that leaves Penn Station at 4:07 PM and ends in Montauk at 6:38 PM. Its stops are Westhampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton. It is unbranded in the data, and it runs on Fridays through late February 2027. Use the Montauk route page for the full list.

Is it the fastest way

On the schedule it beats the Friday afternoon Jitney trips, because the train skips the highway. The Friday comparison sets the scheduled times side by side. A Cannonball trip still includes the time to reach Penn Station, so the practical window is tighter than the 4:07 PM departure suggests.
