By car

Midtown to Hampton Bays is 83 miles by the routes the OpenStreetMap router picks. Hampton Bays is where Sunrise Highway stops being a freeway. East of the Route 24 interchange it crosses the Shinnecock Canal and continues as North Highway, a four-lane surface road better known as the Southampton Bypass. For traffic by day and season, read the guides to Friday traffic and Sunday traffic.

Getting around Hampton Bays when you arrive

Suffolk County Transit's Route 92 stops at Montauk Highway and Ponquogue Avenue, which SCT lists as a quarter-mile walk from the LIRR station. The bus runs about every 60 minutes, every day.

Hampton Bays is the last stop on the Westhampton Line eastbound, so a bus arriving here continues no further east. The Montauk Line buses use the Southampton stop instead.

A one-way LIRR fare from Penn Station is the same $33.00 peak to Hampton Bays as to Montauk, because both are in Zone 14.
