Rent vs buy vs commute weekends in the Hamptons
A summer of 15 weekend round trips costs between about $735 and $1,290 per person in bus or train fares, so transport is a small part of the rent-or-buy decision. The real questions are how many days you will be out, and which stop you will use.
Fares and schedules checked October 2026.
There are three common ways to spend time on the East End: commute out for weekends, rent for a season or a month, or own and live in the house for much of the year. Each changes how often you travel, how you pay, and which towns make sense. This page uses only published fares and schedules; it does not price homes. For rentals, Hamptons Key lists current seasonal, monthly and year-round homes by town.
| Setup | Typical rhythm | Fares per person | What tends to work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend commuting from a share or short rental | Friday evening out, Sunday back, a few weekends | $49.00 to $86 a round trip: LIRR off-peak to Jitney Montauk Line prepaid | A town with a Jitney stop or station you can reach on foot from the house |
| Seasonal rental, Memorial Day to Labor Day | About 15 weekends, often Thursday or Friday out and Sunday or Monday back | $735 to $1,290 for 15 Fri to Sun round trips; more for longer stays | Value packs, an LIRR station town, or a car if you are two or more |
| Monthly or year-round rental, or owning | Several days a week out east, working remotely part of the week | LIRR weekly $173.50 or monthly $487.75 (Zone 14); Jitney packs | A station town, plus a plan for the days you do not commute |
Fares: Jitney effective June 25, 2026; MTA chart effective January 4, 2026. Fifteen weekends is the count between Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2027.
Weekend commuting
This is the setup the fares are priced for. A Friday-to-Sunday trip is a round trip: $49.00 on the LIRR off-peak, $66.00 if both legs are peak, or $86 on the Jitney's Montauk Line, less with a value pack ($56.50 at 12 tickets for $339). The cost guide prices a full season. The decision that matters most is the stop: a house that is a short ride from an LIRR station or Jitney stop turns a bad Friday into a manageable one.
Renting for the season
A seasonal rental changes the rhythm. People who rent May to September tend to leave Thursday and return Monday, which is two round trips a week and leans toward a value pack or a weekly LIRR ticket. Look at the Thursday versus Friday guide and at working remotely.

Buying, or living out east most of the year
Once you are out east most of the week, the question changes from fares to frequency. The LIRR's Zone 14 weekly ticket is $173.50 and the monthly is $487.75, against $33.00 for each peak one-way. Daily commuting from the Hamptons is possible but demanding; see commuting from the Hamptons to NYC for the weekday trains and buses. If the plan is year-round, year-round rentals are a way to test a town before buying.
Pick the town by the stop
Seven places have both an LIRR station and a Jitney stop, from Westhampton Beach to Montauk. Five more have a Jitney stop only. Three have neither and depend on a ride or a ferry: Sagaponack, Springs and Shelter Island. The no-car guide has the full table with each town named.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to rent or commute for weekends in the Hamptons?
They are not alternatives: a weekend commuter still needs a place to stay. The fares for 15 round trips are $735 to $1,290 per person, so the house is the larger cost.
How much is the LIRR weekly ticket to the Hamptons?
$173.50 for Zone 14 (Westhampton to Montauk), and $487.75 monthly, per the MTA chart effective January 4, 2026.
