NYC to the Hamptons without a car

Seven places on the South Fork have both a Jitney stop and an LIRR station, and five more have one or the other. A handful have neither and depend on a ride from Bridgehampton, East Hampton or Sag Harbor.

Fares and schedules checked October 2026.

Getting there without a car is the easy part. Getting around once you arrive is where the towns differ, and that is what this table shows. Each row links to the town guide. The route pages hold the schedules.

The best car-free bases

Southampton and East Hampton have every layer: train, bus, county bus and On-Demand. Five more places have three of the four, listed below. For the others, plan the ride from the stop.

Where a car still matters

Sagaponack, Wainscott, Water Mill and Springs have no fixed-route link beyond the Jitney stop or none at all. Shelter Island needs a ferry. For these, read the car versus no car guide. SCT On-Demand and local taxis cover most of the gap if the trip is short.

Common questions

Can you go to the Hamptons without a car?

Yes. The Hampton Jitney and the LIRR serve most villages, and SCT Route 92 and On-Demand fill in some local trips. A few towns need a taxi or a ride from the nearest stop.

Which Hamptons town is best without a car?

Southampton and East Hampton, which have all four layers of service.
