South Ferry: Sag Harbor side to Shelter Island

The South Ferry shuttles people and vehicles between North Haven, beside Sag Harbor, and Shelter Island every 10 to 15 minutes, 365 days a year. A car costs $18 one way, in cash.

Fares and schedules checked October 2026.

The docks are at 400 Ferry Road on the Sag Harbor side and 135 South Ferry Road on Shelter Island. There are no reservations; cars line up in the right-hand lane and board first come, first served. If you are arriving by Jitney in Sag Harbor, the dock is the next leg, and Shelter Island has its own guide. The other crossing is the North Ferry.

Fares

The operator lists $18 one way for a car under 22 feet, with a rate schedule for trucks, buses, trailers and larger vehicles. Payment onboard is cash only, and round trips must be made on the same day. The rate page shows round-trip prices; the home page and the rate page quote slightly different round-trip numbers, so use the rate page's table. Discount passes exist.

Planning notes

  • Turn off headlights, put away phones and follow crew instructions while boarding, as the operator's boarding guide says.
  • Arriving on foot: the Jitney's Sag Harbor stop is the closest scheduled bus. Check the ferry rate page for the passenger fare.
  • The ferry is part of NY 114, which links East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island and Greenport.
